Children's Medical Center Dallas is our system's main campus, located at 1935 Medical District Drive in the Southwestern Medical District in the heart of Dallas. It is home to the only academic healthcare system in North Texas dedicated exclusively to comprehensive care of children ages birth to 18.
Like our whole system, our downtown campus has been built with patients and families in mind. The campus offers families and visitor several amenities, including the tranquil Haggerty Chapel, a cafeteria with multiple dining options, family resource libraries, Starbucks coffee shops, ATMs and a full-service gift shop. Services such as child life, guest relations, pastoral care and social work help families address the unique concerns that come with having a hospitalized child.
At our newest tower, which will open in 2009, we will relocate our front entrance to Medical District Drive, creating easier access to the hospital. The new 10-story tower also will allow us to expand our services to meet the needs of the growing pediatric population in North Texas, including a new food court. Clinical areas that will expand as a result of this new construction include the Heart Center, the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, surgery and neonatal services.
At Children's Dallas, we receive more than 360,000 patient visits each year ranging from simple eye exams to specialized treatment in areas such as heart disease, hematology-oncology, organ transplantation and cystic fibrosis. Licensed for 487 beds, the inpatient portion of our hospital provides patients and families with comfort and conveniences during their stay. All rooms include a place for a family member to spend the night with a child. The hospital has four specialized critical care units, including a neonatal ICU. The main campus also is home to the first designated Level I trauma center for pediatrics in Texas, demonstrating our commitment to the highest level of care for children as well as our dedication to research, advocacy and education.
When we opened our pediatric day surgery program in 1968, it was the first ever in the nation. The Children's medical staff includes a broad spectrum of pediatric-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists who specialize in caring for children. Patients scheduled for a preoperative clinic visit are seen by a nurse practitioner and anesthesiologist for a history and physical before surgery to assure they are healthy and ready for surgery. To help alleviate the fear of surgery, our child life specialists conduct medical child play therapy with patients before surgery and provide parents and patients an opportunity to ask questions about the surgery. Surgeries range from straight forward, same-day workups to pre-scheduled, multi-system operations.
In addition to the main hospital, the Ambulatory Care Pavilion is dedicated solely to outpatient services. The Pavilion is located across the street from the main campus at 2350 Stemmons Freeway. The clinical space is designed around "neighborhoods," with similar services being clustered together to better serve patient needs. The goal of the neighborhood concept is to enhance clinical collaboration and to make it easier for patients to receive care from multiple specialists. The Dallas Ambulatory Care Pavilion includes a day surgery center called the Pavilion Surgery Center. It is located adjacent to the Ambulatory Care Pavilion includes eight operating rooms where outpatient surgical services are provided.
