At Children's Medical Center

Pharmacy

The Children's Pharmacy department is a national leader in the development, application and utilization of technology and automation resources to provide the safest and most up-to-date care to patients and families.

Pharmacists at Children's join the medical team on daily rounds to better understand the patients' illness, organ function and psychosocial issues that may impact the medication regimen. Pharmacists also serve as an integral component of patient care, evaluating medication use throughout the hospital. They also assist patient families by providing education on the appropriate use of medications.

Education and training

The Children's Pharmacy department includes 60 pharmacists and 59 pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists are required to complete six years of college training and must pass a state board exam and a pharmacy law exam. Many pharmacists also choose to complete additional years of residency or fellowship training to further hone their skills.

Once licensed by the state of Texas, pharmacists are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years to remain licensed. Some pharmacists choose to sit for a board certification exam in pharmacotherapy, oncology, psychiatry, nutrition support or nuclear pharmacy.

Pharmacy technicians must take a national certification exam and must be registered by the state of Texas. In order to remain registered, technicians must complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years.
