Children's Opens Outpatient Center in Plano

Children's Medical Center, the premier pediatric healthcare system headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is happy to announce the opening of the Children's Medical Center Legacy Ambulatory Care Pavilion. Now, when North Texas kids need to see a specialist, parents can easily access first-class specialty health care at the Legacy Pavilion, located in a densely populated area in North Texas that is making national news as one of the fastest-growing in the country. This outpatient center is on the campus of Children's Medical Center Legacy in Plano, Texas, and houses more pediatric specialists under one roof than any other suburban outpatient facility in the country.

"Many of us are parents ourselves – parents living right here in the area – and we all want the best for our kids," said Chris Dougherty, vice president of ambulatory services with Children's. "Children deserve specialized care tailored to them and their needs. We hope this new facility will allow them to see a specialist quickly and get them treated with the best that medicine has to offer. Our goal is to get them back to their jobs of being happy, healthy kids as quickly as possible."

In the area Children's defines as the "Legacy" region – the five-county area north of Dallas – there is a great need for outpatient care. Because of technological advances, pediatric medicine has shifted dramatically to outpatient care, meaning that the demand for pediatric specialists is growing.

Many specialty pediatric services offered at Legacy

Specialty pediatric services being offered at the Legacy Pavilion include: cardiology, gastroenterology (GI), endocrinology, urology, plastic surgery, plastic hand surgery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, laboratory services, radiology and nutrition. Services such as ear/nose/throat (ENT) and sports medicine will be added before the end of the year. Pediatricians in the area have relied on Children's for years for specialists to whom they can refer patients when a need arises. Now, that care is so much closer with the 58 specialists who will practice at the Legacy Pavilion.

Population booms in Legacy region

In 2007, approximately 30,000 patient visits at Children's Dallas came from the Legacy area, most of which were outpatient in nature. The boom of the under-18 population in the area is staggering, growing at 11 times the national average. The staff at Children's is specially trained to work with children, and they see only children. This is important because pediatric medicine is different than adult care, and is best practiced by one place that specializes solely in pediatrics.

UT Southwestern physicians to staff Legacy Pavilion

In addition to being entirely kid-focused, Children's has the added value of being affiliated with a nationally ranked medical school. The vast base of talent and knowledge in the physicians from UT Southwestern who staff Children's Medical Center means that decades of research and cutting-edge techniques are conducted by the same physicians who are treating children every day. This collective brain trust assures the best in medical care for the child in each and every exam room.

The Legacy Pavilion is outfitted with specialized equipment to diagnose and treat a wide variety of disorders and diseases, including lab and radiology services. A full array of pediatric lab services also will be available onsite for patients, making the Children's Legacy campus a central location for all of a patient's needs.

The future of Legacy

The Legacy Pavilion is the first big step in establishing Children's Legacy in the area. Since November 2005, a small specialty center has been operating at the corner of Preston and Hedgcoxe, offering some outpatient services. Those services have now moved across the street to the campus of Children's Legacy, which is scheduled to open inpatient beds this fall. Children's Legacy provides access to all Children's Medical Center has to offer as an integrated healthcare system.

The Children's Medical Center Legacy Ambulatory Care Pavilion is located at 7601 Preston Road. More information can be found at www.childrens.com.
