Nursing Shared Governance

Strong professional practices flourish through the innovative format of Shared Governance — a model that has been part of the culture at Children's for a number of years and has increased steadily in its sophistication and in the flow of information between units, departments and administration.

The evolved model translates into a flat organizational structure where unit-based decision-making prevails. Nursing departments are decentralized with strong nursing representation evident in organizational committees. The Chief Nursing Officer both serves at and reports to the executive level.

The shared governance structure places three key groups at the center of the model:

  • Clinical Practice Council (CPC)
  • Office of the Patient Family Centered Experience (OPFE)
  • Professional Development Council (PDC)

These three groups along with nursing council, committee and department council chairs and co-chairs work together via the Shared Governance Leadership Council.
