Why ‘young and growing’ athletes?

Our staff recognizes that children whose bodies are still developing need a different approach than athletes whose bodies are already matured. Each of the physicians on the team is trained in both sports medicine and pediatrics, which uniquely equips them to care for young athletes. Dr. Philip Wilson, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in the Sports Medicine Center, recently shared his expertise in a video about overuse injuries in young athletes.

Young athletes also often need the expertise of other pediatric specialists such as cardiologists, pulmonologists and even psychiatrists. The Sports Medicine Center at Children’s is unique in the area because it sits within a comprehensive pediatric medical center. Through the Sports Medicine Center, young athletes have access to a broad spectrum of pediatric experts covering more than 50 different clinical specialties.
