Protect your family from influenza A(H1N1)

The influenza A(H1N1) virus is a respiratory disease that presents with symptoms similar to the regular human flu. Take precautions to help in preventing infections. Learn more at www.cdc.gov/swineflu.

The same measures you would take for any infectious disease (bacterial or viral) apply to influenza A(H1N1).

Influenza can be spread by coughing or sneezing, so it's important to use good etiquette when you cough or sneeze. That means:

  • Covering your nose and mouth with tissue or your sleeve when sneezing or coughing
  • Washing your hands thoroughly after coughing or sneezing either with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Disposing of used tissues properly
  • Not touching your eyes, nose or mouth to avoid the spread of germs

Taking these precautions can help in preventing infections. However, if you or your child does develop flu-like symptoms, please visit your primary care provider to be tested. These symptoms include fever, muscle aches, sore throat and a nonproductive cough. Read more about influenza.
