Hereditary Spherocytosis

What We Treat

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is an inherited disorder of the blood that affects mainly Caucasians and Hispanics. Patients with HS generally have a mild to moderately severe chronic hemolytic anemia, meaning the red blood cells break down prematurely. This can lead to a child being tired, pale and sometimes short of breath.

The staff at Children’s is specially trained to deal with disorders of the blood as well as other specialized medical conditions. As a comprehensive, pediatric hospital, Children’s has the expert medical staff, nurses and other clinicians to care for children with multiple types of blood disorders and to handle any other medical needs they may have as a result of their disorder.
