Child Life Student Programs
Children’s Medical Center Dallas has one of the oldest child life programs in Texas offering a variety of opportunities for students interested in pursuing a career in child life. Student programs are designed to provide career training for those currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in child development, human development and family studies, or a related field. Students are provided a comprehensive learning experience encompassing therapeutic play, preparation and procedural support. Members of our child life staff hold advanced degree training in the growth and development of children. The Child Life program at Children’s Medical Center Dallas offers students practicum, internship, and fellowship opportunities every year.

Child Life Practicum
The focus of our practicum program is to:
- Provide students opportunities to observe certified child life specialists
- Begin to relate child development theory to the hospital environment
Build independent professional skills to prepare for a child life internship
Over the course of 12 weeks, students will gain 192 hours of unpaid experience. Students may choose two of the following days: Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Child Life Internship
We offer a 15-week, full-time, unpaid internship designed for students pursuing academic careers in child development, child life, human development and family studies or a related field with the goal of obtaining child life certification. Students who have completed a practicum at Children’s Medical Center Dallas or Legacy are not eligible for our internship. During the internship, students complete two primary rotations with an additional 1 week rotation of choice. Internships are offered during the fall, spring and summer.
Child Life Fellowship
The fellowship provides entry-level child life experience for a college graduate who has completed a child life internship, under the direct supervision of a certified child life specialist. The fellowship provides a stipend for a full-time, 12 month (40 hours per week) placement. Experience, training and supervision are provided in all facets of our child life department.
Music Therapy Internship
Our music therapy program is committed to providing quality education and training for future music therapy professionals. After evaluation of your completed application, letters of reference, and transcript, you may be contacted for an interview. Selection of interns is based on GPA, letters of recommendation, personal interview and musical skills. Preference will be given to students who have had experience in a hospital environment, either as a practicum student or volunteer.
If you are accepted as an intern at our hospital, your university will be required to engage in a contractual relationship with Children's Medical Center. You will also be required to furnish proof of a drug screen and criminal background check at the beginning of the internship. Additional pertinent information will be provided upon acceptance
