Transplant Services at Children's
Children with end-stage organ failure require extensive, specialized treatment that addresses all aspects of their condition. That is why Transplant Services at Children's extend beyond removal and replacement of individual organs to comprehensive care for our patients' physical, emotional, developmental and psychological needs.
Transplant Services encompasses transplants of kidneys, hearts, livers and intestines. Children's has renowned specialists for each type of organ transplant, and our different organ transplant teams collaborate with one another to make sure that all elements of our patients' cases are thoroughly evaluated. One circumstance when this type of collaboration is vital is when children may require transplantation of more than one organ. Children's performed the first pediatric heart-liver transplant in Texas in 2006.
Since the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network began tracking the number of transplant surgeries in the United States in 1988, Children's has consistently been among the top 10 busiest and most successful pediatric transplant programs in the nation. In addition to being the largest pediatric transplant facility in Texas, we perform the most transplants on patients under the age of 5 in the state.
We also understand that transplant patients and their families have needs beyond surgical care. So, our team includes specialists to treat those needs:
