Pediatric endodontics
Pediatric endodontics (end·odon·tics) focuses on the roots and internal structure of teeth with the goal of saving a damaged or injured tooth.
What is pediatric endodontics?
Children will be referred to an endodontist when they experience tooth decay or injury that requires specialized care. Endodontists are experts in saving teeth by repairing internal structures called "pulp" and roots.
Pulp is made of blood vessels, connective tissues and nerves. Roots hold teeth into the jawbone. Endodontists perform treatments and surgeries, such as root canals, to save severely infected teeth, repair teeth and place dental implants.
What are the signs and symptoms that my child needs to see a pediatric endodontist?
- Chipped, fractured teeth or teeth that have been knocked out
- Extensive tooth decay
- Infected teeth
- Painful teeth
