There are three major types of uterine fibroids:
Intramural fibroids - the most common type and develope in the muscular uterine wall
Submucosal fibroids - these grow outside of the uterine wall into the pelvis
Subserosal fibroids - these develope in the muscle layer into the uterine cavity
Abnormal bleeding (between periods)

The cause for uterine fibroids is not known.
