Pediatric Diabetes Classes
Providing age-appropriate training to help improve your child's health
The Diabetes Educators offer basic and advanced classes, in both English and Spanish, to help parents and children learn about diabetes. Talk with your Diabetes Educator to get started.
Survival Skills
This is a two-day education class for children newly diagnosed with diabetes. Successful skills for managing diabetes at home are emphasized including:
- Meter use
- Insulin administration
- Nutritional considerations
- Management of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
Information is provided on day one with a comprehensive review provided on day two. Pattern management(identifying trends in blood sugars) will be introduced in this class.
Diabetes 101
This is a full day class for families that offers comprehensive information for managing diabetes for children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. An overview of emerging technologies used with type 1 diabetes will be covered along with information on pattern management for managing trends in blood sugar readings outside of target goals.
Kid Fit
This is a full day class for families that offers comprehensive diabetes management for children newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who currently are not taking insulin.
Kid Fit has an important emphasis on using lifestyle measures to manage this health concern along with medication therapy
Kid Fit Insulin
This is a full day class that offers comprehensive diabetes management for children with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes with currently taking insulin.
Pump It Up
This is a three hour seminar style class that offers pros and cons for children and families considering an insulin pump.
Participants have an opportunity to try on insertion sets for different pumps on the market and meet with company representatives who will showcase their equipment and services for more in-depth consideration of these products.
Pump Mechanics
This is an all-day class for children starting on an insulin pump.
Children and families will work with company representatives in the morning for navigation and information on pump equipment use, then will with with a Diabetes Educator in the afternoon for an introduction to diabetes management skills for pump therapy
Pump Live Start
This is a two-hour course for children who have completed Pump Mechanics.
Children will be started on insulin with the pump they received training on during Pump Mechanics. A Diabetes Educator will be available for help and support during this class.
