Pediatric Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Center
If your child has a urologic condition that requires surgery, you want a team of experienced specialists that are working for the best possible outcome. The UT Southwestern surgeons practicing at Children’s Health℠ offer proven, leading-edge techniques to help restore your child’s health. We are the only surgical program in the region in which every full-time provider is fully certified in robotic surgery.
Launched in 2008, our robotic surgical capabilities are empowered by a da Vinci Surgical Robotic System. Since then, the team has worked to improve patient care and achieve industry-leading surgical outcomes using this minimally invasive technology. Initiated by Linda Baker, M.D., Professor at UT Southwestern and pediatric urologist, our team of surgeons has continued to advance the field of robotic surgery in children, including applications in pediatric general surgery, gynecology and urology.
Conditions We Treat
- Pediatric inguinal hernia (groin)
- Pediatric cystinuria (inherited kidney stone disorder)
- Pediatric nephrolithiasis (kidney and ureteral stones)
- Pediatric neurogenic bladder
- Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in children
- Pediatric varicocele
- Pediatric vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)
- Pediatric undescended testes (cryptorchidism - UDT)
- Non-Functioning Kidney
- Non-Functioning Upper Pole of Kidney
Major benefits of robotic surgery for pediatric cancer patients
The pediatric surgery team at Children’s Health offers robotic surgery for children with certain cancers to improve surgical outcomes.
Working in collaboration with our adult oncology surgeons in some cases, the effort is focused primarily on lymph node dissection for testicular cancers in adolescence. The improved technology of robotic surgery significantly decreases surgery and recovery time, providing a major benefit to our patients.
The latest innovations, adapted specifically for children
Our team is skilled at adapting the most advanced treatment and surgical techniques for children. We have successfully used the da Vinci Surgical Robotic System for reconstructive surgery on even the smallest children, including infants needing kidney surgery in the first weeks of life. We also offer the innovative HIDES technique to make the scar virtually invisible.
Success achieved by skill, instincts and experience
Dr. Peters really took his time to understand J.R.’s needs and explain exactly what our options were.
The nationally renowned and innovative surgeons that practice at Children’s Health have resolved the most complex urologic conditions for children here in North Texas and across the country. Of course, we use a conservative approach, using robotic and minimally invasive techniques only when no other option will work. Should your child need surgery, you should expect to have a minimally invasive surgical option that offer the benefits of less pain, less scarring and a faster recovery time.
Dedicated to education and advancing robotic surgery internationally
As a major contributor in the field of pediatric robotic surgery, our team regularly provides ongoing educational experiences to an international audience of surgeons. We have conducted two global webcast surgical sessions from our home in Dallas, Texas, and are actively developing new methods to teach robotic and reconstructive surgery. In addition, our team has been actively developing new simulation models for reconstructive surgery to teach robotic surgery at all levels.
