Omnipod 5 Closed Loop Insulin Pump

Insulet, the makers of the Omnipod pump, recently announced that the pivotal trial of their Omnipod 5 Closed Loop insulin pump has completed. While those trial results are still being analyzed, and the pump is not yet available, results from some of the earlier clinical trials are starting to make the rounds at this year's annual diabetes meetings. Omnipod has released a brief presentation summarizing some of the results from their first in-home study of this new closed loop system.
Freestyle Libre 2.0

Speaking about CGMs, exciting news from Abbott last month, as their Freestyle Libre 2.0 sensor was approved by the FDA. The newest generation Libre is approved down to age 4, and will bring optional high and low glucose alerts to the Libre ecosystem. We hope to see these hit store shelves in the coming 1-2 months. Please don't hesitate to ask your care team about this at your child's next visit if this is of interest to you.
Delays expected in Dexcom G7, newer pumps

The delay in execution of clinical trials worldwide due to COVID 19 has already led to companies starting to announce anticipated delays in availability of their upcoming product pipeline. Dexcom has announced an anticipated 6 month delay in their G7 CGM system. We anticipate proportional delays in Insulet's launch of their Horizon closed loop system as well.
InPen App updated

The Inpen – the only available smartpen on the market, from Companion Medical, now supports Fiasp. The mobile app was updated on April 6 with a redesigned home-screen and logbook, bringing dose recommendations to the home screen and allowing users to view glucose, insulin and carbs on one integrated graph. It will even display your long-acting doses, if you record them! New therapy modes, which might make the device more attractive to our patients with type 2 diabetes, are also now available. CGMS approved by Texas Medicaid

Our team is thrilled to announce that as of April 1, therapeutic CGM devices (those approved for non-adjunctive care, including the Dexcom G6 system) are now approved by Texas Medicaid plans. Many downstream details remain to be worked out, but if you are on a state Medicaid plan, please plan to talk to your care team at your next visit about what this means for your child in terms of home options for glucose monitoring.

OmniPod receives ACE designation from FDA

The Omnipod Dash system received approval as an "alternate controller enabled (ACE)" pump. This allows the pump to communicate with connected devices such as the Dexcom CGM system, clearing one of the hurdles for both the Horizon and Omnipod Loop systems in development.

Last month it was nasal glucagon. This month, we have word that the first room-temperature, liquid-stable form of glucagon to treat hypoglycemic emergencies for children on insulin received FDA approval. We hope to see it available for patients within a couple months. Both of these products offer their own unique advantages – if you think either might be right for your child with diabetes, speak to your diabetes care team at your next visit.

Last month, Medtronic announced the opening of enrollment for their in-home study of their Advanced Hybrid Closed Loop pump, termed the 780G. The 780G pump will introduce automated bolus dosing for the first time into the Medtronic algorithm.

The 79th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (#ADA2019) just concluded in San Francisco, and there were a number of exciting announcements.
- If you're interested in the future of artificial pancreas systems, you might be familiar with the coming Tidepool Loop system. Tidepool announced in October 2018 their plans to bring Loop, the open-source, automated insulin delivery app, to the FDA for official consideration to be FDA approved for use by patients with diabetes. Having already secured one major industry partner in Insulet (Omnipod) earlier in the year, at ADA 2019 they announced official partnerships with Medtronic and Dexcom, who pledged to partner with Tidepool to develop new interoperable insulin pump technologies which promise to bring greater choice to patients with diabetes. Loop on a modern, FDA approved Medtronic pump? Yes!
- Beta Bionics announced the beginning of their first in home trial of their iLet dual hormone artificial pancreas system.
- Senseonics announced FDA approval of their 90-day implantable glucose sensor for non-adjunctive dosing in the US.
- Tandem announced the results of their recently completed trial of their Control-IQ hybrid closed loop system, anticipated to be available via software upgrade for t:slim X2 users possibly as soon as later this year.
- Abbott announced the US availability of the Librelinkup App on Android devices. Previously available only to iOS users, this brings share/follow functionality to users of Abbott's Freestyle libre flash CGM system to Android users in the US.

Abbott announced earlier this month the U.S. release of their LibreLinkUp app, which brings "share-follow" functionality to the Freestyle Libre flash CGMS system. After a brief setup process, parents will now be informed of glucose tracing results, on their mobile device, any time your family member scans their Libre sensor.

Freestyle Libre 14-day sensor approved for use

If you are a user of the Freestyle Libre 10-day flash (continuous) glucose sensor, you should know that the new sensors, approved for 14 days of wear, were recently approved for distribution in the U.S. The new sensors also introduce the ability to pair your sensor with certain iOS smartphones, allowing you to leave the receiver behind completely. Talk to your care team at your next visit if you're interested in this upgrade.
